Robbery kingpin, others arrested at Ikorodu


The Lagos State Police Command has nabbed the elusive kingpin of armed robbers who robbed a bureau de change at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport last year.

The robbery kingpin, Samuel Mayegun also known as ‘Asiwaju’ who was paraded yesterday alongside four other suspects, Abiodun Adegayo, Ezekiel Anthony, Ibrahim Sado and Femi Osiyelu, was arrested at Ikorodu area while planning for another robbery operation.

The gang had on February 1 and March 13,2013 carried out a coordinated robbery attack at the bureau de change, carting away more than N500 million.

Although the SP Abba Kyari led Special Anti Robbery Squad, SARS, carried out subsequent raids and arrested seven of the gang members, even as one of them Mayegun, is still at large.

The 30-year-old graduate of building and quantity survey from Moshood Abiola Polytechnic was however arrested by SARS operatives at Ikorodu area of Lagos.

Speaking on the arrests, the Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko, said the suspects were arrested following a tip off from a credible source.

He said, “On that fateful day, we received a tip off at 2am that the notorious armed robber had left his hideout at Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State for Ikorodu where they were planning a robbery operation the next day.

“We recovered one General Purpose Machine Gun, GPMG, one Ak47 rifle with serial number 533124, two double barrels, local made pistols, 10 GPMG and eight AK47 loaded magazines and 32 live cartridges.

“During interrogation, Mayegun confessed to the robberies at the airport,as he admitted getting N45million as share.

“He had recruited other gang members to continue the nefarious acts as he thought the police have forgotten of the airport robbery”.

Manko said the suspect also confessed of participating in other robberies in Lagos and some South- West states including a bank robbery in Kwara State.

In an interview with journalists, the suspect said he had invested his share of the stolen money but was forced to go into hiding after SARS arrested seven members of his gang.

He said he planned to rob for the last time to afford him the opportunity of making enough money to enable him go into long hiding, saying he was armed by one Lakara for the botched operatio
